Martin Parr is the subject and guest-editor of Witness Number 3, the successful new series published by JGS, Inc and distributed by Nazraeli Press. For his contribution to the series - in which one artist is selected for each volume to present their own work as well as work by other artists - Parr unleashes his scorching humor in the series, 'Art World,' photographs made at art gallery and museum openings which reveal more about the art world than some may be comfortable with. This highly entertaining body of work is tempered by the somewhat gentler look at Sri Lanka, made in collaboration with Susie Parr, called 'Little England.' Jeden z najbardziej znanych polskich fotografów. Absolwent wydziału operatorskiego i realizacji telewizyjnej PWSFTviT w Łodzi oraz historii sztuki Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego i paryskiej Sorbony. Wyrósł z europejskiej szkoły fotografii reporterskiej a jego indywidualny styl charakteryzuje się konceptualnym podejściem do rzeczywistości chociaż nie uprawiał reportażu „newsowego”. W jego pracach panuje nastrój wyciszenia, samotności, ale z dozą poczucia humoru.
Pracuje od 1986 roku. Obecnie mieszka w Warszawie. Realizuje projekty artystyczne i reklamowe. Pobyty

Wojtek Wieteska o projekcie „Stacja Warszawa“:
Fotografie do projektu „ Stacja Warszawa“ powstały w ciągu ostatnich dwóch lat. W swoim pierwotnym zamyśle były „zamówione“ jako ilustracje do felietonów Agaty Passent przez samą Autorkę.
Inspiracja tekstami wydawała mi się początkowo ułatwieniem w realizacji zdjęć, a tymczasem okazało się, że niełatwo jest nadążyć za wielowątkową wyobraźnią felietonistki często stosującej fabularyzacyjną konwencję. Nie ma też nic trudniejszego niż sfotografowanie rzeczywistości, w której żyje się na co dzień, spojrzeć z dystansem na własne podwórko.
Ostateczny kształt fotograficzny projektu złożony jest z kilku wątków stylistycznych. Tak więc są tu fotografie kolorowe i czarno-biale, w różnych formatach : od panoramicznych po kwadrat; oraz wielotematyczne : architektura, martwa natura, zwierzęta, plener miejski, wnętrza i najważniejsze: człowiek czyli Warszawiak. Felietony Agaty Passent skupiają się przede wszystkim na stylu życia mieszkańców Warszawy. W efekcie końcowym to człowiek zdominował cały cykl, bo miasto bez człowieka to tylko scenografia bez ruchu i emocji. Nie interesowały mnie folderowe pejzaże i puste ulice. Nie wszystkie fotografie są bezpośrednią ilustracją tekstu, część z nich tylko luźno inspiruje się nastrojem, miejscem akcji, jedną z postaci czy ironiczną uwagą felietonistki.
Na całość projektu składa się 60 fotografii. W Galerii Yours prezentujemy wybór 30 prac. Kilka fotografii w ogóle nie powstało mimo wielokrotnych nalegań (jakże przyjemnych) Autorki np. : korki uliczne czy też wyjątkowo mroźne świty nad Wisłą. W zamian zaproponowałem m.in. misia w zoo i raut w ambasadzie chińskiej…
Ostatecznie też tematu Warszawy nie uważam w swojej twórczości za zamknięty – raz zaszczepiona inspiracja Szanownej Pani Redaktor wydaje się być niewyczerpanym źródłem nowych, codziennych obserwacji fotograficznych naszej stolicy.

Dziennikarka, felietonistka, autorka książek. Jedna z najbardziej popularnych felietonistek swojego pokolenia.
Jej prace charakteryzuje ironia i dowcip, lekkie i cięte pióro. Zajmuje się tematyką z gatunku lifestyle, stroni
od polityki. Ma swój stały felieton w miesięczniku Twój Styl (od 1997 roku). Współpracowała m.in. z Radiem Pin, magazynem City, TVP1. Obecnie również z portalem Onet.pl.
Autorka książek: „Jest fantastycznie“, „Pałac wiecznie żywy“, „Miastówka“ (felietony o Warszawie),
„Olbiński i opera“.
Jest absolwentką Uniwersytetu w Harvardzie i Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego.
Od 2002 roku fundatorka i prezes Fundacji Okularnicy im. Agnieszki Osieckiej (www.okularnicy.org.pl).

Stacja Warszawa“ to cykl cotygodniowych felietonów Agaty Passent, które Autorka wygłaszała na antenie Radia PIN. Powstawały w latach 2005-2006. Felietony skupiają się na codziennym życiu Warszawiaków i utrzymane są w charaterystycznym dla Agaty Passent humorystycznym i ironicznym stylu. Autorka stara się spojrzeć na własne miasto z dystansem, być turystką we własnym mieście. „Nie jestem historykiem, więc gdy zaproponowano mi felietony o Warszawie, wiedziałam, że nie mogę udawać varsavianistki. O Warszawie, czyli o czym—zadawałam sobie to pytanie na przestrzeni tych dwóch lat? Jak opisać miasto, które tyle razy odradzało się na nowo, miasto które nie ma jeszcze wyraźnej tożsamości, miasto przejezdne, miasto bez centrum. Skupiłam się na sprawach pozornie zwykłych, na tym jak codziennie przeciętny mieszkaniec stolicy walczy o przetrwanie w tej miejskiej dżungli.“ Współczesne radio nie toleruje długich wypowiedzi, króluje muzyka, felietony Passent mają zatem lakoniczną formę. „Dyrektor radia PIN, pan Emil Marat, beształ mnie za każdym razem gdy przekroczyłam limit 3 minut na antenie.“

Wybór felietonów złoży się na książkę, która ukaże się nakładem wydawnictwa Nowy Świat w lutym 2007 roku.
Wydawnictwo to ilustrowane będzie fotografiami Wojtka Wieteski. Autorka starała się uchwycić coś z ducha współczesnej Warszawy w słowach, a Wojtek Wieteska „polował“ na Warszawę obiektywem. „Warszawę tak trudno nazwać, trudno złapać, to miasto kadruje się niełatwo. Chciałam, żeby dopełnieniem mych wątłych słów był obraz. Zwróciłam się z propozycją współpracy do Wojtka Wieteski, bo w jego fotografiach znajduję elementy bardzo mi bliskie. Ironię, ale i sentymentalizm. Pod płaszczykiem humoru i sztucznego blichtru staramy się przemycić odrobinę melancholii, smutku. We współczesnej fotografii coraz więcej jest sztuczek technicznych, stylizacji, reklamowego upiększania. Czułam, że Wojtek Wieteska, który nie daje się zwieść modom, nie będzie bał się fotografować ludzi i ich otoczenia“, mówi Agata Passent.

Autorzy tej książki przez dwa lata przejechali Polskę wzdłuż i wszerz. W Łodzi w kinie Pokój zastali kaplicę, w Legionowie zamiast Mazowsza zobaczyli apartamentowiec, a w Szczytnie tylko dziurę w ziemi.

Pomysł na uwiecznienie na fotografiach tradycyjnych kin zrodził się w podróży po Podlasiu. - W Drohiczynie i Siemiatyczach budynki po kinach były w opłakanym stanie. Zapaliła nam się lampka, że trzeba się śpieszyć, bo za chwilę nie pozostanie po nich nawet ślad - opowiada Bartek Nowakowski.

Bartek to warszawiak. Jako dziecko oglądał "Reksia" i "Colargola" w Stolicy (dziś jest to Iluzjon Filmoteki Narodowej). Razem z pochodzącą z Łodzi żoną Ewą Cieniak (pierwszy film, jaki pamięta, to radziecki "Diabeł morski" w kinie Iwanowo) od dwóch lat wolne dni i urlopy wykorzystywali na szukanie starych kin rozsianych po Polsce. Sfotografowali 400. Ewa: - Byliśmy w każdym miasteczku, które podejrzewaliśmy o to, że mogło w nim przed laty istnieć kino.

Kilkanaście kin, którym zrobili zdjęcia, już nie istnieje. W Olsztynie w miejscu, gdzie stał Kopernik, dziś jest apartamentowiec, w Gorzowie Śląskim i w Namysłowie zamiast kin są hotele, a Bajka w podwarszawskich Błoniach to już pusty plac. - Nie zdążyliśmy przed zburzeniem kina w Szczecinku, a w Szczytnie zobaczyliśmy już tylko dziurę w ziemi. Na szczęście są przykłady kin, które wciąż mają się dobrze. Orzeł w Toruniu, kina w Praszce, Ińsku, Zwierzyńcu.

Ewa i Bartek rozmawiali z dawnymi widzami i nielicznymi już czynnymi kinooperatorami. Bartek: - Ludzie widzieli, jak robimy zdjęcia, i sami przychodzili, żeby opowiadać anegdoty. Śmieszne, wzruszające, czasem banalne. Ale oni zapamiętali swoją pierwszą wizytę w kinie do końca życia. Największe wrażenie zrobiła na nas wizyta w Środzie Śląskiej. Tamtejsze kino Carmen to była świątynia sztuki.

Część fotografii umieścili na stronie internetowej www.tubylokino.pl. I poprosili o przysyłanie wspomnień. Bartek: - Jednemu internaucie udało się nas zaskoczyć. Nie zlokalizowaliśmy dawnego kina w Nowym Mieście Lubawskim, które było na środku rynku w dawnym kościele.

Katalogi "Photo Poland"

W ramach programu promocji polskiej fotografii pt. "Photo Poland" IAM wydał 6 katalogów prezentujących prace młodych polskich fotografików.

Realizacja projektu "Photo Poland" rozpoczęła się podczas Międzynarodowego Festiwalu Fotografii w Łodzi (17-20 maja 2007 r.). Projekt ma na celu promocję polskiej fotografii za granicą poprzez umożliwienie międzynarodowemu gronu kuratorów zapoznania się z pracami najlepszych polskich fotografików. Specjaliści, zaproszeni do Łodzi przez IAM i Fundację Edukacji Wizualnej, poznali 15 wyselekcjonowanych, najciekawszych portfolio. Każdy z dziesięciu kuratorów i dyrektorów festiwali fotografii oraz galerii z całego świata wybrał jeden projekt, który zobowiązał się zaprezentować w swoim kraju w formie wystawy w roku 2008.

Wydany katalog zawiera sześć publikacji z pracami siedmiorga artystów: Nicolasa Grospierre’a, Andrzeja Kramarza oraz Weroniki Łodzińskiej, Przemysława Pokryckiego, Konrada Pustoły, Szymona Rogińskiego, Asi Zastróżnej.

Gabriele Basilico (b. 1944) is one of the most important Italian photographers. Coming from the long-established tradition of landscape art, his is an idiosyncratic representation of architecture and landscape. His photographs of cityscapes, residential buildings and factories seem to deny the presence of the artist and to ask viewers to form their own conclusions about relationships between structures, and between structures and landscape. Stripping bare the urban context of any human activity, his work transcends mere instances and seeks to reveal the very essence of 'place' and of our relationship with it.

Basilico is one of the best-known 'documentary' photographers in Europe. He eschews the traditional picturesque forms of landscape imagery to turn his attention the city and the industralized landscape photographed in black and white, with a precision and clarity that is almost alarming. An architect by training, Gabriele Basilico's camera imposes discipline on the buildings on which it focuses - he banishes human life to reveal the life of the building itself.

Basilico travels extensively and in-depth, often working with government bodies to catalogue the appearance of the urban landscape for posterity. He travelled to Berlin in 1990, where he documented the gradual demolition of the Berlin Wall. In 1991 he worked in Beirut, capturing the life and remnants of a city after years of war had taken its toll. Each instance of his work is a unique pictorial record of a particular point in time. He avoids romanticism yet manages to reveal the underlying rhythm and life of the modern urban environment.

Francesco Bonami is currently the Manilow Senior Curator at the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art, and has recently been a member of the Advisory Board of the 2004 Carnegie International and a curator of the 50th Venice Biennale (1993). His books include monographs on Atget, Paul Graham and Maurizio Cattelan, the latter published by Phaidon.

Born in Philadelphia, Steve McCurry studied history and cinematography at Pennsylvania State University before working as a freelance photographer in India. He is most famous for his evocative color photography, which has captured stories of human experience that, in the finest documentary tradition, transcend boundaries of language and culture.

His career was launched when he crossed the Pakistan border into rebel-controlled Afghanistan - just before the Russian invasion - to take the first pictures of the conflict. Since then many of McCurry's images have become modern icons. A high point of his career was the rediscovery of an unidentified Afghan refugee girl, which many have described as the most recognizable photograph in the world today.

His coverage won him the Robert Capa Gold Medal for Best Photographic Reporting from Abroad, an award dedicated to photographers exhibiting exceptional courage and enterprise. McCurry has covered many areas of international and civil conflict, including the Iran-Iraq war, Beirut and the Gulf War. His travels have also taken him to southeast Asia and the spiritual temples of Angkor Wat and Cambodia, made known to many through his memorable images for National Geographic magazine.

A member of the prestigious international photo agency Magnum since 1986, he is the recipient of numerous awards including Magazine Photographer of the Year, awarded by the National Press Photographers Association. This was awarded in the same year in which he won an unprecedented four first prizes in the World Press Photo Contest. He has won the Olivier Rebbot Memorial Award twice. This monograph on McCurry follows a chronological order, identifying major themes and examining key works; a beautifully produced, affordable introduction to one of the leading figures in photography today.

About the author

Anthony Bannon is Director of George Eastman House, the International Museum of Photography and Film in Rochester, New York. He has curated an exhibition on McCurry's Tibetan works and his publications include Photo Pictorialists of Buffalo (1981).

Outland is the culmination of almost twenty years work for artist-photographer Roger Ballen and amounts to one of the most extraordinary photographic documents of the late twentieth century.

Beginning by documenting the small 'dorps' or villages of rural South Africa, Ballen's photography moved on in the late 1980s and early 1990s to their Inhabitants: isolated rural whites, scarred by history, in the process of losing the privileges of apartheid which had provided them livelihoods and sustained their identity for a generation, The results were shocking, both powerful social statements and disturbing psychological studies.

Wszystko zaczęło się 31 grudnia 2000 roku. Postanowiłem zbadać, czym Łódź XXI wieku będzie różnić się od Łodzi w wieku XX. Wybrane miejsca miasta zostały sfotografowane ostatniego dnia roku oraz 24 godziny później, już w nowym tysiącleciu.
Jak należało się spodziewać, miasto nie przeżyło żadnej metamorfozy, jednak Łódź na tych fotografiach wyglądała na tyle ciekawie, że postanowiłem stworzyć dokumentację charakteru miasta na początku nowego stulecia. Interesowała mnie przestrzeń miejska i życie przez tą przestrzeń ukształtowane.

Łódź jest bardzo szczególnym miastem. W ciągu pierwszego stulecia istnienia przemysłowej Łodzi sprzyjające warunki ekonomiczne oraz niezwykłe ambicje przemysłowców pozwoliły na stworzenie witalnego organizmu korzystającego w pełni ze swego unikalnego położenia geograficznego oraz rosnącego bogactwa właścicieli. W ciągu następnego stulecia nastąpił ciąg zdarzeń całkowicie zmieniający relację pomiędzy miastem a jego mieszkańcami. Zmiany były zasadnicze: zmiana granic kraju, zmiana własności większości substancji miejskiej, zmiana narodów zamieszkujących miasto. Zostało zerwanych tak wiele więzi łączących Łódź z jej mieszkańcami, że miasto zaczęło w umysłach ludzi być niezależnym od nich bytem.

Obserwując miasto stwierdzam, że mieszkańcy mają coraz mniejszą wole kształtowania przestrzeni, aby była piękna, funkcjonalna, przyjemna do życia – stają się elementem potrzebnym aby organizm miasta mógł dalej funkcjonować.

Although Wegman's artistic output includes photography and video work that doesn't feature canines, "by the mid-Seventies," he wryly notes, "I had become the guy with the dog." The dog was Man Ray, a weimaraner with a movie star's instinct for the spotlight. Using a 1978 20x24 Polaroid camera, Wegman captured his beloved dog on film; for more than 20 years now, Wegman has continued to experiment with the camera, immortalizing his next weimaraner, Fay Ray, and a long line of her progeny. Though the collection contains a few portraits of people, next to the expressive and enigmatic canine tableaux, Wegman's human compositions are pale and unengaging-less human, in fact, than the dog photographs. In Rouge (1982), one of the last portraits of Man Ray, the ailing dog's eyes shine with wisdom and melancholy. In contrast, 1982's Eau II, a portrait of a glammed-up woman with a bloody nose and a Chanel bottle, seems cold and dated (or in the vein of a knock-off Cindy Sherman). It is when Wegman, refraining from indulging his latter-day fascination with prop and costume anthropomorphism, focuses on the dogs themselves-whether on their musculature, their sleek taupe coats or the graceful incline of their brows-that his photographs take on a life of their own and become truly beautiful. There's no shortage of opportunities to see photographer Wegman's work, with numerous books currently in print, together with a minor industry producing notecards, calendars, and T-shirts; his dog photographs may be some of the best-known images of any contemporary artist. This title showcases Wegman's efforts with the Polaroid 20 24 camera, although it is an open question as to whether the book's concept merits the publication of yet another Wegman title. Still, it is beautifully produced, with many color illustrations (almost all of his pet Weimaraners), foldouts, and a lively, easygoing text by Wegman, who studied art in the early 1970s when Conceptualism was at its most robust. His style developed out of the philosophical, questing strategies employed by Conceptual artists, and, while one can find echoes of those strategies here, absent is the searching, intellectual honesty that characterizes the best Conceptual art. Wegman's work is undeniably charming, often amusing, and occasionally quite moving. Given the exposure he has, however, libraries with limited budgets might consider purchasing books about lesser-known contemporary artists influenced by Conceptualism or one of several titles currently in print discussing the achievements of Conceptual art. “I started out as a fashion photographer. One cannot say that I was successful but there was enough work to keep me busy. I collaborated with Harper’s Bazaar and other magazines. I was constantly aware that those who hired me would have preferred to work with a star such as Avedon. But it didn’t matter. I had work and I made a living. At the same time, I took my own photographs. Strangely enough, I knew exactly what I wanted and what I liked.”

Saul Leiter was a painter and only became a photographer when color photography could encompass the distinct color palette he wanted to include in his images. Since the 1940s, this inveterate walker has trawled the streets of New York, capturing its colors and spirit. His liking for disarray, solitude and elusiveness make him a unique artist, quite unconcerned about joining the throng.

“I spent a great deal of my life being ignored. I was always very happy that way. Being ignored is a great privilege. That is how I think I learnt to see what others do not see and to react to situations differently. I simply looked at the world, not really prepared for anything.”

This book contains several previously unpublished color pictures and his early black and white pictures.

The idea of publishing a book on Eugenio Forcano, one of the most significant photographers of the sixties, was met with great enthusiasm on our part. Now the project has become a reality.

The most difficult part of the process has been the selection from an enormous collection of very high quality, including a sizeable portion of unpublished work. All of the essential images are here, accompanied by a compilation of brand new photos which are being shown for the first time here, and which will serve to enrich and strengthen the prestige that the artist has already earned.

Eugeni Forcada surprises us with his blend of agitation and astuteness. His is a personal view of the world that surrounds him, with originality, intuition, and the gift of pressing the shutter precisely in the ‘decisive moment’ that Henri Cartier-Bresson spoke of. His photographs are taken with freedom and embrace an endless range of situations and expressions of humanity, from drama to irony. They are photographs that provoke reactions, and emotions.

For Eugeni Forcada, photography is a way of life. For this reason he has never been trapped in the past, in glorious black and white. He was attracted to the world of fashion and illustration, and created his own suggestive and original world. Aromas inspired him like a flash of inspiration, and the photographer of life at the bottom of the ladder changed into the imaginative artist who raided the rainbow to fill his new pictures with light and colour.

In order to enter into the life and work of Eugeni Forcano, we have six articles by experts who provide their detailed and critical views. Then come the photographs themselves, a discovery and also a deeply moving pleasure. This is how we felt as we were editing this book.
